Our Story

This is a short video about the renovation of the old house into what is now the Hideaway

Hideaway on Lee is going back in time creating a familiar feel in the form of an old house converted into a bar/restaurant/music venue taking inspiration from the old hotel bars around the world while incorporating the intimate feel of a Louisiana house dance. Our cocktail program features seasonally-driven classic and original cocktails with a nod to the origin and story behind the drinks.

Our kitchen is dedicated to classic Americana, the burger, serving both classics and regional burgers as well as our own creations.

In the bar we serve elevated yet simple bar bites and shareable items such as pâté, pickle boards, cheese boards, olives and salads.

The House:

Renovation of Hideaway on Lee began on February 17th, 2020.  The old house, which was home to many friends and musicians in Lafayette, was built in 1905.  The 12’ ceilings and solid pine walls and true 2x4 construction was one of the reasons why the house was well preserved from the floor up. Below the floor, most of the joists and sills were cracked or broken; some of the piers had sunk and some were improperly replaced with hollow cinder blocks which had shattered under the weight of the tenants throughout the years.  All the floor under the bathrooms was rotten and the house sagged 4” in the rear.  Using lasers and jacks and LVL beams and a lot of hard work and muscle, we removed all the interior walls and fireplace, working hard to save every piece of lumber from the walls.  We saved enough to reuse the lumber in the new walls and as interesting trim throughout the newly renovated space.  The floors were in bad shape, having been covered in black tar paper and linoleum.  It took 24 hours of solid sanding to get them the point that they were “good enough” for the Hideaway.

It’s a mix of new and old.  The porch and men and women’s bathrooms are completely new additions to the space.  And we spent probably 100 hours designing and winding tape measures around corners to make handicap ramps fit in tight spaces.  We added two ramps, one in the front and one in the back, and made all bathrooms and amenities 100% ADA compliant. We were on a tight budget and spent the money in the most important spots to make our vision a reality.  We have multiple ways to configure the space to provide indoor or outdoor dining as well as a small music stage outside for quaint concerts or a larger stage indoors for dance bands.
