Nikia Yung hails from a small town outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Surrounded by music at an early age, Nikia followed in the footsteps of her family members studying classical music throughout childhood and into college. After graduating with a violin performance degree from the University of Delaware, she began exploring the art of songwriting and performed with Mason Vixon, a country-rock band, in the Baltimore/D.C. area.
In 2014 Nikia released her first solo album titled "Taller Than Trees" then relocated to Nashville, TN. She formed a new band, Strange Rivals, and began recording and performing with the alternative-rock trio. She performed and toured with Joanna Barbera (singer-songwriter) and Stealing Oceans (hip-hop), and spent many hours in studio sessions for hired work.
Shortly after moving to Lafayette, LA in 2018 she released "Wild Beasts" and went on tour with Gino Vallecillo (drums) and Jordan (Ardoin). Since settling into Lafayette, she has performed regularly at most of the local venues and performed at Festival International in 2022.
Determined to break the mold and perception of violin, Nikia is pushing the limits and writing new material featuring violin in an unconventional way. Learning how to use both, violin and voice, she is transforming genre and creating a new sound, pulling from her classical background and fusing it with pop/rock melodies. She has also been seen performing with other local notable bands and artists such as The Rayo Brothers, Sean Bruce, The Good Dudes, Derrick Savoie, Dustin Gaspard, and many more.
